M2M (Machine To Machine) Data Communications

At the heart of all M2M solutions is the ability to send meaningful data from one point to another, typically from a machine to a machine. Over cellular, this data can be sent a number of ways:

  • Packet Data – 3G, HSDPA, GPRS, CDMA 1x & EV-DO
    • Packet data can be used for very low cost communications suitable for “always on” connections and sending low amounts of data
    • It also provides wireless broadband capability offering data speeds similar to land line speeds of ADSL, especially with the latest HSDPA networks
  • Circuit Switched Data (CSD) over GSM and CDMA
    • Speeds up to 14 kbit/sec
  • SMS over GSM and CDMA and Satellite
    • Short messages of up to 160 Characters that can be coded to hold substantial quantities of information
    • Useful for infrequent data messages but can get expensive if regular data communications is required.
  • DTMF tones over mobile
    • Works better over GSM than CDMA
    • Low cost way of sending small amounts of data frequently with the added benefit of knowledge of receipt (the call is established)
  • Data over voice
    • An emerging area with several developers working on solutions offering data speeds around CSD rates but with the ability to take advantage of voice tariffs

Typical M2M Applications Include :-

  • Fleet and Transport
  • Vending and Retail
  • EFTPOS
  • Asset Tracking
  • Security and Surveillance
  • Consumer Data
  • Metering and Monitoring
  • Emergency Services
  • Healthcare
  • Public Traffic Systems
  • Telematics
  • Public Information Display
